The City of Burnaby Calls for an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
Written by Making HeadlinesOn Nov 6th, City of Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley and City Councillors Alison Gu, Joe Keithley, Pietro Calendino, Daniel Tetrault, Maita Santiago, Sav Dhaliwal, and James Wang passed the resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Burnaby Muslim community is crediting the advocacy of the following organizations for this outcome: NCCM - National Council of Canadian Muslims, The BC Muslim Association, the BCMA Burnaby Branch Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre, and Simon Fraser University Muslim Students Association (MSA).
City Councillor Daniel Tetrault announced the resolution on his Twitter account by stating the following:
"Tonight, Burnaby council unanimously supported a motion calling on the Canadian government to support a ceasefire in Gaza. I have heard from people in the community who are pleading for elected officials from all levels to speak up and take a stand. Canada must act now. My Jewish values have also taught me to stand up against injustice and for the liberation of all people. It is because of the lessons from my grandparents and these values, that I ask our Canadian government to call for an immediate ceasefire."
The City of Burnaby is the first city council in Canada to pass such a resolution.
