Syrian Canadian Foundation Arabic-Speaking Trainer in Mental Health (6-Week Contract)
Inspired by the government commitment to resettle Syrian refugees in Canada, the Syrian Canadian Foundation (SCF) was founded in January 2016 and aims to empower newcomers and people of diverse backgrounds while promoting cross-cultural exchanges within Canadian society. We engage with partners and volunteers to build welcoming communities and culturally customized services for Syrian newcomers and other diverse communities.
Program Overview
The Sawa Program empowers Arabic-speaking newcomer mothers and their children by fostering a culturally conscious, safe space to learn about positive parenting and children’s mental health. Through online and in-person workshops and one-on-one sessions, participants gain valuable knowledge and coping strategies, empowering them to improve their own wellbeing and allowing them to better support their children.
This cohort, running from mid-January to the end of February 2025, will include up to 16 online sessions, each lasting two hours, focusing on raising awareness and building skills around mental health, positive parenting, and related topics. This position offers a total compensation up to $6,000 CAD.
SCF is seeking an experienced Canada-based trainer who can conduct the mental health sessions online. The trainer will take on the following specific responsibilities:
Trainer Responsibilities
The selected trainer will:
- Design and deliver up to 16 interactive sessions (final number of sessions to be confirmed with the selected trainer) tailored to the needs of Arab women, focusing on mental health topics and practical strategies for application (specific topics to be agreed on later with the Program Manager).
- Facilitate discussions in Arabic, ensuring a culturally sensitive and inclusive learning environment.
- Collaborate with the Program Manager to align content with participant needs and program objectives.
- Provide resources, exercises, and examples relevant to participants’ lived experiences.
- Offer support and create a safe space for participants to share and learn.
Skills and Experience Required
- Fluency in Arabic and in English (spoken and written) and familiarity with Arab cultures.
- A background in psychology, mental health, or coaching, with a strong understanding of family and community dynamics.
- Proven experience in training, facilitating workshops, or coaching, particularly for diverse or newcomer communities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster trust and engagement.
- Experience in creating culturally relevant and gender-specific content for group settings.
