Montreal Jan 25 2025 Statement from the Canadian Muslim Forum in Montreal, Quebec

As we mark the 8th anniversary of the tragic Quebec Mosque Massacre, we reflect on one of the most horrific acts of violent Islamophobia and hate-based terror in Quebec and Canada’s recent history. On January 29, 2017, six men were senselessly murdered at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre. Their lives were cut short in an attack that escalated Islamophobia in the most brutal of ways.

Eight years later, we are forced to confront the painful reality that Islamophobia is no longer a distant phenomenon. It has become a dangerous and pervasive illness that continues to stain our society, affecting the daily lives of many. What we hoped would be a wake-up call for all societal stakeholders has unfortunately become a reminder of how hate, unchecked, can destroy lives and communities.

.

In the years since the massacre, Islamophobia has spread far beyond the fringes of extremist ideologies. It is present in political platforms, mainstream media, workplaces, public spaces, and many facets of daily life. Muslim women and men are targeted simply for their choice of belief and their right to practice their faith freely.

Our collective responsibility is to stand in solidarity with the families of the victims of the Quebec Mosque massacre. We must continue to remind our society, and especially the political class, that hate, discrimination, and bigotry have no place in our communities. It is their duty to stand against such forces and protect the safety and dignity of all individuals, regardless of faith or background.

The fight against hate is one that requires all of us to stand united. We must work together, not only to honor the memory of those we have lost, but also to safeguard the future of our society. Our diversity is our greatest strength, and it is up to all of us to nurture it with respect, understanding, and compassion.

Let this anniversary be a call to action for all of us to remain vigilant, to combat hate in all its forms, and to continue building a society where love, acceptance, and unity prevail.
