Details:
On Saturday, December 21st, Sisters Dialogue in collaboration with Palestine Poetry Project presents “Poetry as Liberation”: A safer, welcoming space for women to gather in community, share, learn, and find solace through the art of spoken word. This is a curated space for those who identify as women only. Through poetry, we create a moment to breathe, to tell our truths, to hold each other’s pain and joy. A time for connection, and healing in a world witnessing a genocide. As we seek and build together more sustained liberatory efforts, this event is an invitation for the community to come together as a safe gathering place for collective grief and respite.
We will be featuring artists Yusra Ali, Natasha Butt, Abraar Alsilwadi, and opening by April Eve Medicinespiritdancer. Nora Yaghi will start us off in a good way with a grounding exercise and thus will be the designated Active Listener for the event.
There will be an open-mic portion for attendees to recite pieces. Those who plan to sign-up are encouraged to arrive as early as possible– there are a limited number of spots and they are granted as first-come, first-serve. Bring poems about (including but not limited to): Palestine, Turtle Island, Lebanon, Sudan, Congo, the collective struggle, liberation efforts and more. You are invited to bring work that was written by other figures/writers or written by yourself. Please make sure that the pieces you share do not interfere with our call-to-action to empower, amplify, and sustain under-represented voices.
The event ends late so we do not recommend children to come. However, if you require childcare, please contact us at contact@sisters-dialogue.ca as soon as possible.
Tickets:
If the finances are a barrier, please reach out to contact@sisters-dialogue.ca as soon as possible. We will provide complimentary drinks and snacks for anyone in need, to ensure everyone feels supported and included.
Community Agreement:
We are calling on every community member to commit to the following protocols:
As participants of the Palestine Poetry Project x Sisters Dialogue poetry night, we are gathering to mourn the on-going destruction, devastation, and displacement of Palestinians and the staggering loss of life in occupied Palestine, West Bank, and Gaza. Palestine has a rich history and tradition of poetry, deeply interwoven with a permeating principle of art as a tool of resistance.
By attending this event, we are held to a collective agreement that each of us will hold genuine, caring space for and listen attentively to the featured performers, for the people of Palestine, for Lebanon, for Turtle Island, the Congo, for Sudan, for all of us who are fighting for heaven on earth.
If an individual is behaving violently or otherwise behaves disruptively, heckles, or disturbs the event, they will be considered in breach of this community agreement and will be asked to leave safely. We also request that, in the event of any interruptions, us- as the community- shall commit to the ethos of de-escalation so that we can focus on what this space is for.
