In early 2002, a group of committed Muslim women from the Montreal community recognized the need for a psychosocial center specializing in women’s issues. Coming from a variety of different backgrounds, they came together to respond to this need and created The Amal Center for Women.
As time went on, the number of cases affected by domestic abuse and violence became hard to ignore. Amal then decided to focus specifically on these cases, specializing it’s services to meet the needs of women and their families afflicted by domestic abuse. The name “Amal” comes from the Arabic language and means “hope” because we at Amal believe that the community has a responsibility to provide hope and aid to women and their families facing domestic abuse.
