Ottawa Almahdi Centre was founded in 2002, with the blessing of the religious authority, Grand Ayatullah Sayid Ali al-Sistani. A number of believers had taken the first steps by renting a location and officially registering it as a religious institution. The idea of establishing this religious center was triggered by an urge to fulfill the needs and ambitions of our respected community in having a place of worship and spiritual gathering according to the teachings of Ahl-ul-Bayt, peace upon them all. The principal activities of the Imam al-Mahdi Centre fall into two general categories, namely: religious activities, and cultural and education activities. Religious activities consist mainly in the performance of ritual acts of worship, such as collective prayers, as well as weekly Thursday night gatherings to recite Dua Kumayl, Ziara of Imam Hussain (peace upon him), and a religious lecture. The Center also organizes gatherings to celebrate the events of the Islamic calendar throughout the year, such as the birth and death anniversaries of the fourteen infallibles (peace upon them all). Given their spiritual significance to Muslims, the holy months of Ramadan and Muharram are celebrated with special daily ceremonies every year. Finally, the Center has recently added the Friday prayer to its regular religious programs. Facebook: Ottawa Almahdi Centre
