Justice For All Canada Stands With MP Salma Zahid

Justice For All Canada condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the arson attack outside the Scarborough home of Member of Parliament Salma Zahid. In a reprehensible act of violence, an individual set fire to MP Zahid’s vehicle on August 27, damaging other vehicles in the process. This placed MP Zahid, her family, and neighbours in serious and regrettable danger.
Although we are relieved that there was no physical harm to anyone, we urge Toronto Police to conduct a full and transparent investigation examining every potential motive, including political, racial, and religious. The deliberate use of fire outside the home of any sitting parliamentarian represents a grave act of violence. It brings danger to the doorstep of an elected representative and exposes community members to harm.
Canada’s democracy deserves representatives who can serve without fear or coercion.
“This violence against MP Zahid carries consequences far beyond just one person. It threatens the constituents whose concerns she carries into Parliament. It also chills democratic participation and raises the spectre of political intimidation,” expressed Taha Ghayyur, Executive Director of Justice For All Canada.
MP Zahid has consistently used her office to elevate impacted people in Canada and beyond. For instance, she introduced numerous legislation seeking greater transparency from Canada’s security agencies following consultations with racialized communities. Her successful motion established June as Filipino Heritage Month across Canada. MP Zahid has consistently condemned antisemitism and stood against hate targeting Jewish homes, students and places of worship.
She has consistently defended Palestinian rights, pressing Canada’s government to support a Gaza ceasefire, humanitarian access, and accountability for violations of international law. She has fought for families trapped in Gaza and has advocated stronger controls over Canadian arms exports.
MP Zahid voted to recognize the genocide against Uyghurs, supporting a pathway to safety for Uyghur refugees. She challenged systemic delays affecting African refugees. She confronted the discriminatory impact of Quebec’s Bill 21 on Muslim women. She raised the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Parliament during the height of the genocide.
MP Zahid is known and respected for her ability to listen to Canadians and bring their voices into federal decision-making. Canada needs such leaders who carry the struggles of underserved communities into the heart of Parliament.
Justice For All Canada calls on public authorities to protect MP Zahid, her family and her staff. The individual(s) responsible for this attack must be identified and held accountable to the full extent of the law. We stand in complete solidarity with MP Zahid and uphold her right to serve her constituents and to champion equality, free from violence and intimidation.
MP Zahid’s advocacy continues to reach across communities and borders, and her record of compassion and empathy distinguishes her among many of her parliamentary counterparts.
